16.

HELLO! Okay big news...we got our Internet back! Woo! We got the new modem in last night and my hubby got the Internet working, but we had to sit on the floor plugged into the modem and it's just lame. So this morning I went and bought a new router and ta-dah! Wireless Internet once again :) So now I won't be disappearing on the weekends and I can respond to comments much faster.

I have a question, we've talked about a lot of us having that "something caught in the throat" feeling. But I want to know about something else, does anyone have a problem with things touching their necks? I can't remember it happening before, but definitely after I had my thyroid removed I started getting this more and more. Now this last year - two years it's over the top. I can't wear necklaces, I can't wear regular t-shirts, if someone touches my neck I freak out, and the majority of the time if my hair touches my neck I can't handle it. It literally feels like I'm being choked, but from the inside. You can ask my husband...I start gagging, grabbing at things to get them away from my neck and I go into a panic attack when this happens. It makes me so sad because the hubbs has bought me 4 amazingly beautiful necklaces since we've been together...and I want to wear them again! Does this happen to anyone else?

Okay yesterday marked one month being on the Thyroid Diet! I can't believe it's already been a month! So when I weighed in this morning I weighed 297.2 I lost another pound yesterday :) In one month I have lost 24.8 lbs!!! I'm so excited! Thank you all for the encouragement and support! I can't wait to see where this new diet a.k.a. lifestyle change takes me and my thyroid problems! Until next time!

  7. It took almost 10 years before I could wear a necklace. I couldn't stand things around my neck. People thought I was crazy.

  9. No its not just you. I am 13 years post thryoidectomy and I also dont like things around my neck. I only wear v'necks or low cut tops (not revealing of course *grin*). I can wear necklaces but only long ones that dont touch the front of my neck - then I take them off after a couple of hours anyway..
Congratulations on your weight loss success! You are awesome and such an inspiration. I am reading the book and when I get up the courage I will get started on it.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

  15. Anonymous and Catherine -- I haven't deleted any comments. I'm sorry that they were deleted, there must have been a glitch last night/ this morning because some of mine were deleted as well. I don't understand everything about this blog site but I do know that a lot of my family and friends aren't able to choose a profile, or comment on here at all. I'll try to look around on the site and fix it if I can find anything. I'm sorry that things were lost at all. If you can I would love to read what you guys wrote, if you could try to send it again

Leonie -- thank you so much for sharing that, that is exactly how I am. if I feel really good on a certain day, I can put on a necklace, but I always need to take it off within an hour or two :( I also can only wear v-neck and wide scoop shirts.

  16. Molly when it comes to t-shirts I also try to buy the v-neck or scoop neck....necklaces I can do sometimes, I am starting to get worried because I have read how Thryoid pt's are sensitive to cold and hot weather. This past winter was my first winter as a hypothryoid pt, and yes the cold weather got to me, Now that summer is approaching OMG! I am freaking out about that because if anyone knows how it is here in San Antonio Tx well we have summer for about 7 mos. out of the year and the weather during the summer months can get up into 102 degrees Hot humid weather, are you get sensitive the hot weather? Sometimes when it gets really humid down here I feel a sense as if I cant breathe. Does anyone else ever feel like that?

  18. Brenda you live in San Antonio!? ewww it does get super gross there! We're in Pflugerville and we went with some friends last summer, after the little ride on the riverwalk we went to a movie cause it was too much! But yes. I am very sensitive to both hot and cold :( I will feel like i'm dying of heat when my hubbs is perfect. And I'll be shivering uncontrollably when he's a little warm, SO it just so not fun. Haha. If I am walking a lot or working out in the heat and humidity there are times where I feel like I can't breathe.

  19. ever since my TT 2 months ago...i still have a numbing sensation when touched around the collerbone left shoulder side. so it feels weird if anything brushes against it.

  20. When I had my hystorectomy 25 some years ago, I noticed a real sensitivity to anything touching the scare area--problem sloved when I wore panties that did not cross the scare (I have a "zipper" scare), as for the scare on my neck, maybe mine is higher than yours, since I had no wrinkles in my neck at the time I had it removed, I have no problems with that scare. If your is a "fresh" scare, that may be the problem, give it time and that "weird" feeling may go away. The nerves need to be given time to "grow" closer together--the scare may always have no feeling.
As for hot and cold--all winter I have been wearing up to 4 layers at a time, now that it is warming up, I am enjoying just one or two layers--except when the humidity goes up, then I wish I didn't have to wear anything.

  21. Lori -- Oh that's crazy, have you told your Dr about that? Or did he say to expect that??

Anonymous -- Thank you for that! I actually don't have a scar however. I had radioactive iodine done so it was all done with a simple pill! I'm sorry your hot and cold is so extreme! How frustrating ahh!

  22. My family always thought I was just making it up about feeling like I was being choked. If I wear a top that touches my neck I am forever pulling at it to give me some breathing room, even though it really is not tight at all. Have not worn any sort of turtle neck since I was 12. If I wear a necklace it is either long or very light weight so I don't notice it.

  23. Lorna thank you for that! It makes me feel so much better knowing I'm not alone :) That's exactly how I am!

  24. Yes, I have that problem however, i still have my thyroid and a goiter on top of it. I haven't been able to wear a t-shirt in ten years. For four years my hair never came down out of a pony tail. If i brushed my hair i would puke from my hair touching my neck. I haven't worn a necklace or anything else since.

    ReplyDelete
  25. no way! I used to wear my hair down EVERY single day. Now I wear it down about once a month, and even then it's only for like an hour! Sometimes, because my hair is so long I can't even do a pony tail, I have to rock the messy bun look a lot. but that's interesting to know you still have yours! I can't remember having this problem when I had an enlarged thyroid. Thank you Courtney!

  26. I just found your blog, and am happy to hear from someone who is so honest and open about her experiences. I could learn a lot from you!

I've been hypothyroid for almost 30 years (I'm 46) and I realized only recently that I've settled for feeling crappy my whole life. I still have my thyroid, but have a multi-nodular goiter and in the past couple of years, have started having a lot of issues with shooting pains in my neck as well as feeling pressure around my neck and even down under my collarbone and down into my upper chest. I didn't realize until recently that I had stopped wearing turtlenecks sometime in the past 10 years or so.

So, you can definitely have the throat issues without surgery. Interestingly enough, my maternal grandmother always had a thing about clothes (or anything/anyone) touching her neck, but I'm pretty sure she was never diagnosed with a thyroid problem. She may have had one, though, without ever being aware of it.

I'm finally becoming more aggressive about pursuing treatment. I'm going to new doctors and having more tests run and nagging them to modify my dosages until things change for the better. I feel like I've aged 20 years in the last 2, and I'm NOT going to feel like this the rest of my life.
