12.

Hello hello! It is sooo almost Friday! WOO! Alright well before I get to my super exciting news about myself, I have some people asking questions that I definitely did not know how to answer, or know anything about! So I did just a little bit of research, and of course every wonderful thing that came up was by our one and only Mary J. Shomon! So everything I talk about is from these three sites, Thyroid&Celiac Thryoid&Fibromyalgia Thryoid&Joint/MusclePain . Okay soo Courtney, I believe it was Courtney, wanted to know if Thyroid problems and Gluten problems went hand in hand. And yes they do! From what I learned, a lot of people who have thyroid problems, had Celiac first. Mary said that Celiac can actually cause thyroid problems. And on that website that I linked, it talks all about it and even gives you a small gluten free foods to eat! So definitely check that out! Next, ASP was the one talking about pain all over (which I definitely have too)! Okay so Hypothyroidism, and Hyperthyroidism definitely causes joint pain and muscle pain. So does Fibromyalgia. (which after reading that site...I am definitely asking my Doctor if I have this next time I see her!) Fibromyalgia is an autoimmune disease just like thyroid problems! And it causes widespread joint/muscle pain and tenderness throughout your body, and it affects 8 million people in the US! Definitely check out those last two links. Mary explains everything and it was definitely a good read! So I hope that helps a little bit you two! I did look at other sites other than the ones Mary has, but they all said the same thing. And I would personally rather read one of her sites anyway! haha!

Okay now we have some goooooood news! My clothes are definitely a lot bigger on me! I can't even believe it! When I look at myself in the mirror all I see is HUGE right? But when I put on the clothes I've been wearing at even my top weight I can't BELIEVE how much of a difference there is! My shirts aren't skin tight, they're actually hanging off me! (which is great I wanna cover those rolls haha) my pants are huge, and I can even go in to the tightest row of hooks on my bra (when I was at the loosest and it was still uncomfortably tight) I'm so excited! AHH! ANNNNNNNNND yesterday I weighed 305.2 and this morning I weighed 304!!! WOO! I weighed 8 times to make sure, 3 times right when I woke up and 5 times an hour later haha! 1.2 lbs yesterday! SO excited! So I've lost 18 pounds in less than a month! And my original goal was to lose 4lbs a month! Yea I definitely did a weird looking dance this morning when I finished my 8th time getting on the scale haha! Okay so depending on if anything big is going on tomorrow I may or may not have another post til Monday (our internet is still out at our house :() But I can definitely check comments you guys post on my iPhone! and I would love to hear from y'all! Like Courtney and ASP, if you guys have questions...and no one has answered about it yet let me know and I'll do some more looking up! Until next time!

  1. Molly,

Thanks for checking... today I bought Mary's book. I'm having a bit of trouble deciding what plan to do so I may start with the freeform one. I also went to see a new doctor today and found out my problem is autoimmune...it's acting like Graves Disease and she's doing lots more tests--tests my endocrinologist never even mentioned.

I finally--after 2.5 years--have some hope! The first thing she told me to do was to cut out the gluten and probably the dairy. I am starting on a new path tomorrow. New life. I have some answers and feel sooo encouraged. (It's been so so long since I felt encouraged.) If this doesn't work, I feel like I've finally found someone who will keep looking till it's fixed!!

Anyway, thanks for answering my questions! :) I really appreciate it. Such good news about your loss!! Congrats YOU!

  2. Hi! Thanks for this wonderful blog. I too struggle with Hypothyroidism, and have been for the past year and a half. Prior to my battle, I was very fit and worked as a personal trainer. The stress of that job caused me to quit doing it, but i still worked out daily. I picked up about 20 pounds in a month and a half, and then continued to gain a steady bit of weight. I did not change my eating habits, and have always been an avid healthy eater. Now I weigh over 200 pounds, and have yet to feel balanced again. I struggle with losing weight, and at times feel a bit defeated. Staying positive is what keeps me going as I know I will eventually get back to the me i was prior to hypothyroidism.

Anyways, my question is...Can you give me a sample of a daily meal plan that you eat (like what exact foods you are eating).

Thanks again for sharing your story. Congrats and keep it up!!

  5. Hi Molly!

I just came across your blog. I recently discovered I have Celiac disease. I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism about ten years ago. I had been feeling awful for quite some time and thought my thyroid meds were not working. I was in a lot of constant discomfort, could not sleep so turned on the television at 3:00 a.m. the Dr. Oz show was on and it was about Celiac Disease. I watched transfixed because the symptoms that were being described were exactly what I was enduring. Upon researching further I read that Celiac causes Thyroid problems. After reading the symptoms of Celiac I now believe I was suffering from it long before being diagnosed with Hypothyroidism.

I immediately started a VERY strict gluten free diet and was amazed at the difference in how I felt. My hair has grown back, my skin is blemish free, I am sleeping better and have more energy. The diet has been easy for me as I was already eating a healthy diet. Bread was easy for me to eliminate as I am not a "bread eater."

I am looking forward to following your story,

    Blessings,

    Irene

  6. Molly,
You go girl! You have such a wonderful positive outlook. Congratulations on your weight loss. I've lost 35 pounds. One bright day last winter I decided to cut out bread and sugar, and that was the key for me. The weight melted off. I have fibro (the other "f" word!) as well as being hypothyroid, and it did make a huge difference in how I feel. Vigorous exercise isn't an option for me. I don't feel as good as I used to pre-fibro, but I'm much better. Side benefit, really nice new clothes!!!!
    Be well,
    Kathryn

  9. Congrats on your weight loss, keep up the good work! I was diagnosed with hypo about a month ago and I'm on my second week of trying to lose weight. I'm down about 3 lbs. so far, been sick this week so haven't done as good as I should. Anyway, I had a question, don't know if you know the answer but I thought I'd ask. I thought I read somewhere that people with hypothyroid or on thyroid meds should not drink green tea. I drink/drank green tea all the time before I went on the meds. but hadn't much since going on them. The other day I had a cup after taking my meds and ended up feeling nauseous and getting sick afterward. I don't remember where I read that or the reason given for not drinking it but I started thinking more about it after my incident the other day. Do you know if this is true and if so why? Thanks!

  10. Molly, I got to your blog through Mary Shomon's site - and I have to just applaud you for your wonderful attitude! I also applaud you for sharing your story. I too have been struggling since I was diagnosed and even more since my complete thyroidectomy/cancer treatment. When I gained 30lbs in the 6 weeks after my thyroid was removed, I couldn't believe it! (Of course, I was already 60lbs more than I was when I started!). My doctor asked me if I had started eating a ton. I answered - um... no. I've just been surviving at a no-metabolism level! Duh! In any case, I would love to keep watching you to keep my inspired as well. I have been trying to get back to where I can be semi-healthy. I started at 234lbs and am down to 207 (after about 9 months... I got down to 193 but then went back up to 213, now back to 207). In any case, I hope you don't mind me lurking here, I don't know you, but I really respect your efforts. Most people don't realize the havoc no thyroid plays with your entire body & system. Way to go!

  12. Hello Molly,
I just came over to your blog from Mary Shomon's newsletter that I get, so I haven't read your whole story yet. But, the Fibromyalgia pain for me went away when I started taking Armour thyroid.

The bookkeeper where I work was told by her Doctor to cut out the gluten too. She has Hashimotos Disease just like me.

For Lent this year I gave up everything white - not sugar - no bread - no potatoes - no rice - no flour and I added no alcohol. I haven't felt so good in years. And, I slept like a baby. Also my knees stopped hurting and I had boundless energy.

I've gone off the diet it since Easter, but realize that a restrictive diet is probably the only way to go if you want to get well.
So I will be wrapping my head around needing to go back on it in the next few weeks, but I'm definitely getting that we need to be gluten free. My grandma died from the complications of Celiac disease . . .

I'll be fascinated to watch your journey - very inspiring. . . and maybe you will motivate a bunch of us to take this journey with you.

A big hug from your thyroid sister,

  14. Leonie, Abu, M and Megan -- Thank you all so much! I am so blessed to have you all following this! And Megan how is your journey going so far?

Courtney J -- Have you tried the Thyroid Diet? If not I strongly recommend that you at least read the book! I feel so much better, and I can't believe how much I'm losing. Breakfast: 1/2 whole wheat english muffin, 1 tsp butter, 1/2 cup 2% milk. Lunch: 1/2 whole wheat english muffin, 2 tbsp. peanut butter, 1 string cheese, 1 cup of green beans. Dinner: always changes, but I have around 3-4 oz of turkey, or red meat or 6oz of chicken. With chicken or turkey I melt 1 tsp of butter on it, with hamburger meat I cut up 5 large black olives and mix it in and have green beans or a salad. Snack 1: one small apple, 5 large black olives. Snack 2: 5 large black olives 1 cup of cucumbers. Hope this helps! And when I go out to eat: FAJITAS ARE MY BEST FRIEND! I get no beans, no rice and no tortillas!

Irene -- Oh man I'm so glad you found out about the celiac! And I'm glad it's made a huge difference! It's so hard going through life when you feel horrible! Thank you for telling me your hair grew back! I'm waiting for that to happen and now I have hope! haha

Kathryn -- GOOD JOB ON LOSING 35 lbs! I'm not supposed to exercise period! my Doc might flip out if she heard I was walking 2 miles a day. But there were times when I couldn't walk from my office to the bathroom, so I understand. Don't do it if you can't or don't feel good enough to!

Andrea -- I hate gaining weight! I fully understand gaining 30 lbs in 6 weeks! My biggest jump was 20 lbs in a week. I hated it! And please, you crack me up, I do not mind you lurking around here hahaha! I feel the same way, people definitely don't know what it's like to have these problems. And I put on such a front that no one knows anything is wrong, now I hope people see what's going on inside and see how hard I'm working to live my life.

Sherell -- I'm so sorry you have this totally lame disease :( But I am so here for you! We all are! And congrats on losing 3lbs already! woo hoo! I don't know about the green tea, but I'm going to post a new blog today and I'll research it before than and put it in #13! So be on the lookout!

Sharon -- I am doing the Thyroid Diet, by Mary J. Shomon, and out of the three diets you can do with the Thyroid Diet, I am doing Free Form!

Redhead -- That's awesome you found something that made you feel amazing! So lent was definitely good for you this year! haha! I hope you find something that you can do for the rest of your life that makes you feel just as good. AND HOW DO I OPEN MY BLOG SO MORE PEOPLE CAN COMMENT!!!! I've been dying to figure that out!!!

Jerilyn -- Haha you are too sweet! And keep it up! I'm right there with you girl!

  16. Okay awesome! Good luck you can so do this Sharon! Make sure you like what you're eating, or this will never work. Keep the mindset that it's a lifestyle change to make you feel better. Don't forget to treat yourself to something that isn't on the food list once a week. And just go for it!

  19. First off, CONGRATS GIRL ON THE BAGGIE TROUSERS!!! WHEEEEEE!!! It is always such a huge spirit booster when you leap over those hurdles one at a time and see results! Good for you!

I am pretty sure that Thyroid and Fibro go hand in hand...Hypothyroidsm supposedly leads to Fibro if left to get out of hand. I need to go and get the book tomorrow when we do our regular shopping trip. I usually just use the internet to do all of my research, for menus and tips to info on finding resolutions for my pain and suffering. Actually, I am gonna hit the library as well since I am flat broke and can't buy all the books I want to buy :)

Can I also add you on Facebook? I am under Tanya Davis-Frizzell

  20. haha thank you so much! Yea I've been reading the same thing when researching Fibro! I'm seriously going to ask my Dr if I can be tested for it! Enjoy reading the books and yes, library..best friend. hahahah! I'm gonna go add you right now!
